Maybe I Enjoy the Chase

Dizz reminded me I never made my classic "Most Influential Songs of the Year" birthday post. Better late than never. My memory is rusty, but here were my top fourteen hits for posterity.

Young Dumb & Broke - Imagine Dragons
Use Me - Goo Goo Dolls
Confident - Demi Lovato
Me and My Friends - James Vincent McMorrow
Waving Through a Window - Dear Evan Hansen
Shallow - A Star Is Born
Teenage Rockstars - Andrew McMahon
I'd Rather Be Me - Mean Girls
Mean - Taylor Swift
How to Save a Life - The Fray
Written in the Sand - Old Dominion
Ruin My Life - Zara Larsson
I Will Always Love You - Dolly Parton
Space Cowboy - Kacey Musgraves

Some of these helped me live as a ghost in Chicago, some of these helped me feel home in LA. Most of these were crucial to my car singing. They all hold a special lil spot in my heart.

Everyday

I write every day. Journaling, blogging, a hefty email--these things count--but besides all that, I also strive to work on a play, my book, or a script every day. Two pages is the rule of thumb. It's been hard lately. I'm now in five ongoing improv shows, coaching a team, teaching four classes, tutoring eight hours a week, and my list of my day staples keeps growing. Read inspiration every morning, workout, eat a protein-rich breakfast, put away my clothes, do ten minutes of Japanese study. It's been a No Time for Fun Fall. I am perhaps too honest to peripheral friends. "I would love to hang out, but honestly, I have no free nights until December 17."

Tonight I got home from rehearsal and needed to sit and be with Bisque. And then I needed to read up on all the new sexual harassment allegations of the day. And then I needed to write, but, oh, what a long day. I finally began at 11. It's 11:50. It took me 50 minutes to get two pages on my new short. But I did it.

I've been stressed the past two weeks after somehow skating over all my obligations through September and October. I guess students are desperately trying not to fail, I have six weeks until my solo show reopens, I'm trying to run myself as a business, I eat too much candy. But some things I have liked about the past week: starting Big Little Lies, the sweetness of my new theatre, honest rehash on the Argyle train platform, playing a singing rat in yesterday's set, confetti canon at The House of Blues, inspiring a stranger, a chocolate fountain at my new play opening, when I am listened to, the student in the back row crushing his monologue, goofball English students, giving new improvisers easy information, never feeling embarrassed in front of a good friend.

Fall Semester 2014 in 26 Snapshots

Graduated in May, but the semester life is far from over. This was probably the hardest semester of my life. Long train trips to the south side to bring a playwriting program to an underserved school, the neverending stream of late work from community college students, the lower paychecks, the higher rent, the days of inherent 4 mile walks, the beginning of the blistering cold nights. But I MADE IT. And, even, I am emerging from the swamp I felt I was drowning in back in August somewhat...victorious. Good student evals, a promotion, two new works on stage, opportunities to perform. There's gold in these hills, folks, and I am leaving the apartment everyday with my pickax and my bus pass, grammar books, and my hot pink mace.
HS boy with a high top explains how it hurts to hear men are jerks.
Screaming about soup with a vocal fry in the cabaret space.
Eating two baked potatoes across from my mom, janky steak house.
A billion cheese cubes in the VFW hall.
Droopy eyes at Bisque, Spiff dances wildly, Ogie the monster.
Bisque in the snow holding cocoa under the A. McMahon moniker.
"It could be so much better." I feel a mirror behind me.
Fall trot with Pookie to the shopletts on Broadway.
Sittin' at the southern kitchen table talkin' educational loans.
My dad takes photos of me getting the high score on Pac-Man.
The barefoot audition.
The Daily Burn, parfait, Friday Night Lights tradition.
Sneezing my face off in class. Gel making me use it.
Sitch and I are the annoying people on that Wednesday night bus.
Oopa! All the saganaki with aunt 'n' uncle.
Crying at what was to come in the New Mexico desert.
Kicking my feet in bed after opening the congrats email.
Using poofs as chairs for living room improv sets with Meat Gang.
Eatin' a ghost cookie on the hottest October (makeshift birthday) day.
The wannabe gym coach putting up his hood to read a poem in 100.
The quiet gamer pretending to flip a table in the 101 debates.
Ripping on the sweetie pies of Tuesday/Thursday.
The pros and cons of living in Saudi Arabia with my tutee at the library.
Wooden post painting where we are members.
The longest and most literal Labor Day ever.
The lightening machine at Science and Industry.

This list was so much harder to make than usual. I barely scratched the surface of things that are monumental because things are packed! Packed, I say.

A Million Things Inbetween

A year ago I was in Vegas having the time of my life (AKA seeing David Copperfield and inhaling everything at the dessert buffet, shout out to my home girl lemon squares! Y'all a powdery hero of our culture!)
Stratosphere with Cager.
It seems like I lived an entire life between then and now. Thesis, graduation, Italian getaway, teaching, teaching, teaching, South Carolina beach, girl's getaway haircut, snowy Boston, trolleyride in Virginia, the nights it was funny to be up on the toilet, the long stretch of cobblestone it wasn't, my friends hanging banners, my friends with donuts, my friends with wet hair in rainbow lights. I found a page in the back of my planner last night. A pro con list of flying out here for Thanksgiving to audition for The Program. All the realities were once pro and con lists in pencil.

I want to say once you choose, you choose, and the process dissipates. But that's not quite true. Sometimes maybe, but sometimes that one flick of a comment during the grunt work haunts you forever, or you have to consult your high school diary to know what it felt like to win the big meet.

I suppose each day is the important day. It doesn't seem we get the privilege of controlling what will stick, so make it all something you don't mind being stuck to.

Remember This Of All

Felt-tipped markers for lists. Lists of prison lit, revisions, screenplays to grade. A freshman with thick brown curls props his skateboard against the door, shares his script about bombs dropping on his Lebanon home. He was 14. 9 AM Playwriting gang.

Spent office hours in the heart of campus. Sunshine. Reading interviews of The Wooster Group. About their 2002 production. I was 14 then? Fast. Don shorts for a night scoot to Flour's cottage in the hip neighborhood. We walk the sidewalks and talk about her break-up. It's raw, it's red. Emotional equivalent of reaching for that last handful of M&Ms and realizing you already ate it. "I remember that," I think, but there's a sheen over those histories. It's good to be here. She squeezes my arm. "That's him." The boy happens to be bicycling by. I hear her heart plop to the road.

I am so happy lately. There are reasons, but there are always reasons. There are also always reasons not to be. I don't know why the scales have tipped one to the other, but they have. And I am grateful. It's not always this way. I thank everything. "Remember this," I tell me, "this."

Why can't you see the sky isn't green anymore?
Why don't you know what I need on these shores?

Mems, Cremes, Neve

Memory:

A photo I took of me and Yatchface the first day we were friends. "Look," we said. "Look at the way we sat. Our knees are friends." And then that night we went out for sushi together. Fall 2008.

My mom and aunt are here visiting. I had trouble climbing the stairs to my bedroom just now because my stomach is crushing my lungs. Boop.

Good News (10)

1. My Dramaturgy paper came back: 29/30.
2. My Theatre History paper came back: 29/30.
3. I haven't been able to find my iPod for the past week, so finally I realized...yup. I left it on a treadmill last Thursday. I started looking at the new models and peeping my budget. Just to be sure, I asked the front desk if a small pink shuffie was turned in. The guy told me it was unlikely. But, then, lo and behold, he emerged from the back room with it. "You're really lucky," he said. "This never happens with iPods."
4. My mama and aunt are visiting this weekend. My mom is bringing scones. My mom actually makes the best scones.
5. Sid just called about some comedic stuff and ended the conversation saying, "I think you're right. I think you've got me on this factory farm stuff." (!!!!!!!!!!!!) Veggie debates!
6. Muff writes me THE BEST e-mails.
7. This morning I woke up early to finish some reading for class, but then I just talked to Henne on GChat. I finished the reading anyway, and I love Henne.
8. Chelle got an iPhone. I can now text her Emoji. This is huge.
9. Chelle is wrapping up an Alice-inspired veggie week.
10. Christmas displays in CVS. I don't care if it's commercial, I can't wait to eat a Reeses tree.

There's a lot more--but I will stick to 10 for today, so all of you don't have to feel TOO jealous.

My mid-term desk. THIS PAID OFF!

New Ideas I'm Thinking About Thanks to Muff

After dipping my feet into the Mississippi last month. It had to be done.

Muff visited me for an entire week. A week! Here are some new ideas I am churning:

-Could there really be an afterlife? Would all existential crisis be terminated if you believed so?
-What exactly is the study of literature?
-Some people don't have any self-confidence. That should be remembered.
-It's really nice to not worry about being left out.
-Infinity exists in a small patch of woods. There are orb-weavers there.
-Our relationship with things that can be sensed is really just brain power making us think we have a relationship. Like, when you think about it, what does food actually taste like, and why do we like it?
-You can go crazy trying to prove your own philosophies right, but if they are right, they probably can't be proven--especially by you alone.
-If you believe in the whole person, everything about the person can be beautiful and complete.

The Killers

There are a few things I have come to realize are killers for me. I would guess they're not killers for everyone, but they have the capability to make me feel miserable. I think it is sad to be restrictive to yourself, but I DO think it is wonderful to realize what makes you feel bad or good and to have the bold thought to stop or start--whatever you need.

Without further ado, my realized killers:

-Not having a book I'm currently reading
-Not going outside at least twice in one day
-Lack of exercise
-Lack of spiritual reflection time
-Inability to write
-Potatoes (besides baked)
-Copious driving
-Waiting to do laundry until the last minute
-Messy living quarters
-Meat and Fish
-Not showering for longer than two days
-Fashion/Women's Magazines
-Too much peanut butter
-Too many Republicans
-Not enough contact from my Koh Hos

We shouted out into the sky, 'We're never gunna die!'"
